PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — For many, the new year means “out with the old, in with the new.”
Lots of folks are cleaning out their closets and donating their unwanted items to local charities.
It appears that wave of giving at the end of the year and beginning of a new one, is having a positive effect.
“People are thinking about, sort of, cleaning out and cleaning up for the new year and we do appreciate everything that is offered,” Safe Haven of Pender Board Member and Volunteer Natalie Coe said.
WWAY spoke with ‘Safe Haven of Pender,’ it’s a non-profit that helps victims of domestic violence.
Some services offered are their emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis hotline, support groups, and more.
“Our goal is always to empower survivors to restore power and control over their own lives,” Safe Haven of Pender Communications Director Lori Kirkpatrick said.
50% of its profits are driven by its thrift store off Hwy. 17.
Board Member and volunteer Natalie Coe said an already busy part of the business has gotten even busier within the past month.
“We absolutely could use volunteers at any moment,” Coe said.
According to Safe Haven’s Communication Director, their biggest need right now is help with donations processing.
“People like to start cleaning out and donating over the holidays. So, ya know, we have been a little bit over run,” Kirkpatrick said. “But it’s a good problem to have because those items that are donated, they serve two purposes.”
Those two purposes are providing affordable clothing to the community, that in turn funds resources within the organization.
“It’s an easy way to make a lot of people happy and feel like they’re giving back to both the women, the children, and our environment,” Coe said.
